IRCd upgrade & SSL comes to Slacked!
May 6, 2008
Update 6 May 2008: We’ve completed the upgrade, ahead of schedule!
Over the past few days we have been gradually upgrading our servers to charybdis 3.0.0. We should be finished by the end of this week.
The biggest change is the addition of SSL support; once servers have been upgraded you will be able to connect using SSL on ports 6697 and 9999. The upgrade also introduces some new channel modes for dealing with users connecting with SSL, the z channel mode (which restricts the channel to clients using SSL) and the $z extended ban.
Schedule:
- 01 May: switch osprey out of the irc.slacked.org round robin — done
- 03/04 May: upgrade hubs (phoenix & chocobo) — done
- 04 May: upgrade osprey — done
- 05 May: switch falcon out of the irc.slacked.org rr, replace with osprey — done
- 08 May: upgrade falcon — done
- 08 May: add falcon to the irc.slacked.org rr — done

Update 0045 UTC: This issue has now been resolved.
Update 0020 UTC: Estimated resolution is within ~15-20 minutes.
At 2350 UTC two customer switches at our provider failed, causing falcon to be unavailable. Awknet are working to resolve the problem as expediently as possible. Sorry for the inconvenience this will cause.
Our provider has released the following RFO:
At roughly 5PM PST one of the customer distribution switches went offline. We’re currently investigating the cause of this outage. Unfortunately this appears to have caused a link event based kernel panic on the second customer distribution switch (they’re cross meshed), effectively taking down both customer primary distribution
switches. Due to the holiday no datacenter staff are currently on site, however we do have a tech racing into the DC now to restore both switches to working order. We appologize for the apparent string of issues in the last week, and are working to restore your access as quickly as possible.

We’ve received the following statement from Awknet regarding the recent problems with falcon:
Mar 19 2008 5:35AM PST
—-
This past week our core switch started to suffer some main board hardware errors which caused several brief problems with connectivity. A vendor was contacted regarding a replacement unit and we began running diagnostics on our existing hardware. It seemed there was a hardware failure effecting packet memory for one port. Disabling that particular port and restructuring the network this past weekend seemed to resolve the issues - we had hoped until the replacement switch arrived. This morning we received more packet loss pages and discovered that the extent of the hardware issues with the switch were grossly understated by the diagnostic tests.
PENDING RESOLUTION
This morning we will be running stress tests on an alternate switch and migrating core switching responsibilities to it. This will result in another, brief outage (1~3 minutes) while BGP sessions are reconnected and physical connectivity is swapped. We will closely monitor the current switch to minimize any lag or connectivity loss until this process is completed.
Fortunately there won’t be any immediate need to migrate off of this device once it is active, so we may all return to enjoying the network stability Awknet has provided until this recent issue.
The maintenance took place earlier at around 1200 UTC. This should be completely resolved now.
